Mellieha Local Council announced during a press conference that it had reached an agreement with Din l-Art Helwa for the restoration and guardianship of the White Tower, located at Armier limits of Mellieha.
Mr. John Buttigieg, the Mayor of Mellieha explained that with the limited funds available, the Local Council couldn’t meet the expenses needed to restore the site. This was the fifth location that the Mellieha Local Council was giving in guardianship to NGO’s, amongst which is the Red Tower which is also under the guardianship of Din l-Art Helwa.
Ms. Maria Grazia Cassar, Executive President of Din l-Art Helwa, while thanking the Mayor for entrusting the site to Din l-Art Helwa, said that the site will be used for educational purposes which include historical information about fortifications built by the Knights of Malta and the environment surrounding the site.
Parliamentary Secretary, Ms. Deborah Schembri, thanked both the Mellieha Local Council and Din l-Art Helwa for their commitment to restoring this site to the benefit of all Maltese and Tourists and future generations.
The restoration project, which includes the surrounding ditch and guard room is expected to take about three years to complete, with an estimated cost of €500,000.
